When you fill in your profile on WhatsApp or Messenger, people you’re calling or texting can read info about you, and you access theirs. TrueCaller does the same to regular cell or landline numbers: with it, you can fill in your profile, read others, and detect and report spammers and scammers.
Design and Usability 9/10
TrueCaller looks like a regular phone app, with some additions. If the number is already assigned to some user profile, it will show you the name and the avatar if available. Of course, if you already have a certain number stored in your phonebook, your local settings override the cloud profile. But when you need to know who’s calling you, TrueCaller can help with that. Chances are not 100%, but far above zero.
Key Functions 8/10
TrueCaller is designed to give its users information about who calls or texts them. If someone is identified as a spammer or a scammer, you can report them to TrueCaller. When your complaint is accepted, calls from suspicious numbers will also display how many people have marked them as frauds. Sometimes these calls still make it to your phone; in this case, you can block particular numbers manually.
TrueCaller can also be your virtual business card. It doesn’t have to be your given name; you can use your alias or the brand of your business, so the recipients see who’s calling them the very moment the call starts.
Of course, it requires an Internet connection to load the data. When offline, TrueCaller only operates its data cached for current logs. Later, though, it syncs your call log to its servers and identifies those left unrecognized.
Security & App Purchases 8/10
If you still feel insecure about providing your personal data connected to your phone number, consider this: your data is already accessible to investigations or explorations by authorities or data scientists. It won’t harm you to provide some public data to your phone account. It doesn’t have to be your real name; a business brand or an alias will do too.
A premium account lets you see who visited your profile, and, on the contrary, visit others’ profiles unnoticed. It adds the premium badge to your profile, lets you send up to 30 contact requests a month, unlocks advanced blocking options (like spammer list auto-update), and, finally, removes ads! It’s just $29.99/year. And for $249.99 you get your yearly Gold status, with all the premium features, golden caller ID, and higher support priority; mostly it looks like a purely status thing.
TrueCaller adds the power of Internet messengers and VoIP apps to the simplicity of phone calls. The hivemind gets all the spammers and scammers profiled with it, and when somebody unfamiliar calls, chances are you’ll find their profile on TrueCaller.
