Asphalt 9: Legends Review

The newest installment of maybe the most famous racing arcade is finally here! Asphalt 9 is a legend of the legends; probably the most elaborate and posh driving experience, with physics sacrificed for the sake of drive, and cars of all times meet in the same garage for your pleasure.

Graphics and Sound 10/10

More glamour, more glitter, more speed, and more drive: that’s the motto. The game takes you to the grandest routes, from Barcelona to Himalaya, from city and ocean drives to mountains and deserts. While you’re mostly distracted from sightseeing while driving, the immersion still does its job, and you’re deafened by screaming drift and wild roar, and you’re blinded by sunrays playing on polished metal and glass.

Not so much you enjoy the story as you sip the feel of those cult cars, from Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Chevrolet Camaro to Lamborghini Terzo Millennio and Bugatti Chiron.

We don’t expect realism from Asphalt series. A crash just holds you back for a couple of seconds; the more objects you collide with on your way, the bigger score you will receive. But, except for that cartoon behavior, the physical part is quite good, and the cars run and roar very convincingly.

Controls 10/10

Racing games usually utilize a unified set of controls on mobile devices. You need to tilt your device to emulate the steering wheel, and use onscreen buttons for accelerating, braking or do tricks. Asphalt pays prior attention to drift mode and speeding up, so these buttons are the most essential.

Those familiar with the previous installment will easily get used to Asphalt 9. But if you’re new to the series, you better start with TouchDrive option. It does the wheeling automatically, so you’re here only to push Nitro, activate drift mode and do the tricks.

Gameplay 10/ 10

It’s all about driving and racing. You start with a party of 8 drivers, and your mission is to finish ahead of them all. Well, at least be the third to get rewarded. As you earn points (or pay), you can convert them to upgrades for your current car or to new ones.

Racing is the essence of the game, and various modes are built around it. Maybe most players will consider multiplayer mode the most fun. Get connected and enjoy this cross-platform run against rivals from all over the world!

Lasting Appeal 9/10

It will take you long to unlock all the cars and upgrade them. But testing them is a real pleasure. Besides that, you can alternate playing on a different device with the same Facebook or Gameloft account, to change the tactile experience.  The routes are various and numerous, so exploring them is fascinating. That makes Asphalt 9 a long play game, albeit racing gets too monotonous sooner than one might think.

If Asphalt is no champ in racing arcades, it’s a very serious rival. Anyone fond of cars will enjoy it, and those who not into cars will surely appreciate that detailed, rich racing world.
